Get Active With Your Kids
March 10th, 2008 · Filed Under: Childhood Obesity
In addition to weight training and our cardio sessions, Angie and I stay fit and healthy by being active with our kids. Of course our children benefit from this as well. My kids love the television and video games just as much as every other kid and that’s why we have to come up with fun activities that are more appealing than their favorite cartoons. Check out this short video of one creative way that we got our kids active this past weekend. Not to mention it was one heck of a workout for myself…

We have been getting dumped on with a lot of snow lately and while other people have been complaining about it, we’re taking advantage of it. ‘Old Man Winter’ have become my new training partner since I’ve had to shovel the drive way more times than I can count on my fingers and toes. And yes, snowblowers are for wimps.
The blizzard like conditions have never stopped me from getting my morning walk in either. The fire that I have burning inside me right now is more powerful than any obstacle that attempts to get in my way. But I don’t look at the blizzard as an obstacle. I actually enjoy it and take the challenge on as I know it will make me a better, stronger person. I can only imagine how easy it’s going to be once the weather is beautiful out.
When I was looking at our high snow banks the idea of turning them into igloo’s hit me and boy did the idea ever become a hit with my kids Shayne and Noelle. It got them out doors running around.
Being active with my kids in the snow…
It’s easy for people to allow obstacles and circumstances to get in their way. For my family, we look at obstacles as opportunities. Funny thing is that these obstacles always turn into the funnest times that we have together.
I wish there was a way to count how many calories that I burned helping the kids make these snow forts and running around with them. I know that being active with them is helping me get in great shape, but even more important it’s creating memories that will last a lifetime and forming a bond with my children that can not be broken.
I’ve spent some time this past weekend thinking of how grateful I am that I’m in great health and am able to do the activities that I did with my kids outdoors in the snow. I couldn’t imagine not having the energy to do these fun and wild things with them. As they grow, I know that I’m going to have to continue to improve my health and fitness even more if I want to continue to keep up with them.
I encourage you to do what it takes to increase your energy and health so that you too can give everything that you can to your children. I encourage you to be creative with the activities that you participate in with them. I encourage you to focus on continually improving your health all in the effort to get the absolute most out of life.
Have an absolutely amazing day!
