Unity is the key to reversing the obesity trend

Childhood Obesity - What Can We Do?

April 23rd, 2008

The Fit ChicHi everyone…I really feel passionate about doing my part to help stop childhood obesity from becoming the ‘trend’ that it has recently. I want to make a difference. I feel lost at times at what kind of approach to take.

I love being around children and was thinking about creating some sort of outdoor fitness session for kids. I have not worked any specific details yet.

However, then I start thinking that what if I do this and then they go home to their parents where they are only offered processed, high fatty foods? All of my efforts would be abolished. Or would they?

Do Our Schools Contribute to Obesity?

March 26th, 2008
· Filed Under: Childhood Obesity · Inspiration · Obesity In The News · Obliterate Obesity Nutrition

Hello everyone…I was just reading an article about the unhealthy foods served to our children in the school cafeterias.

The local farmers in New York are trying to get the school system to hop on board and buy their fresh fruits and vegetables to sell in the school cafeteria. The article states that,

Children - “Too Obese for Booster Seat”

March 19th, 2008

I just came across this headline in the news yesterday:

“A study by accident researchers in Melbourne (Australia) has found that almost 40 per cent of children who meet the height criteria for booster seats are too heavy to use them. ”

So what are parents doing about it? I would hope that they are taking a serious look at what they are feeding to these youngsters and trying everything that they can to get their weight under control.

However, this is what the researchers have found during their study:

Childhood Obesity & Extra-Curricular Activities

March 18th, 2008

Hello there…I just need to know if I am the only one thinking this: I believe that too many extra- curricular activities is playing a role in the obesity of our children. I truly do.

How strongly do you feel this plays a role?

I have so many friends that are constantly complaining about how busy they are. They then go on to say that tonight after school they need to bring their daughter to piano, then their son to hockey, and by the time they are home there is no time to make dinner so it’s dinner ‘on the road’ once again. How many families do you know that live like this day after day after day? It’s crazy. How many times do you eat out a week because you say you ‘don’t have time to make dinner?’ How many activities are your children involved in? Are they physical activities or sedentary? Are your children overweight?

Childhood Obesity- Who is to Blame?

March 18th, 2008

Did you know that the statistic for children who are obese (100+ lbs overweight) in 2004 was 18%? Another astonishing stat was that if you factor in those children who are classified as ‘overweight’ the stat rises to 28% of the population! This is 4 years ago…I know it is higher now. It is obviously a REAL CONCERN when the courts are now looking at a child’s weight in terms of custody. I just heard this on the television. A parent or possibly both may lose their right to have custody of their children because that child is obese.

Do you see this as a form of abuse? Who is to blame?

Get Active With Your Kids

March 10th, 2008

In addition to weight training and our cardio sessions, Angie and I stay fit and healthy by being active with our kids. Of course our children benefit from this as well. My kids love the television and video games just as much as every other kid and that’s why we have to come up with fun activities that are more appealing than their favorite cartoons. Check out this short video of one creative way that we got our kids active this past weekend. Not to mention it was one heck of a workout for myself…
